Could you please introduce yourself to our listeners?

My name is Karolina Oliwia Marut, better known as Olivia. I’m a Kraków-based DJ who is part of the Radar and Chrono Bross collective. I was one of the founders of the (now defunct) club Radar. With Gosia and Lukasz I run the ”Unsound Interferencje” radio show in OFF Radio Krakow .

How has the mix been recorded and what’s the idea behind it?

I use two turntables and a mixer. The Podcast was recorded at one take. I wanted to record something that is longer than one hour. I’m tired of recording one hour podcasts in which I can’t build as tory. I prefer to play longer sets than one hour or even two hours. So I recorded a two hours podcast starting with some Cosmic tracks and going to Acid, through Electro, House and Techno. There is some new stuff and some classic tunes from the likes of Drexicya or Dynamix II. I was just standing in front of my turntables at my home studio and started to play records which I like and just recorded it.

How long have you been deejaying and how has it evolved over the time?

I started playing in 2003 with my brother Kinzo Chrome. We still play together as Chrono Bross collective. I’ve always played various kinds of House like Chicago or Acid House and Techno, Electro while my brother pulled me into italo and disco stuff. The strongest influence on what I’m playing is The Hague’s music scene and the radio station.

You’re working for the Unsound Festival in Krakow. What is your task there and what will happen at Unsound 2015?

Yes I have the pleasure to be a part of Unsound crew but I mostly do administrative work. The Festival lasts a week and you find a lot of different music genres such as Ambient, Noise, experimental music and more clubby stuff like Techno, House and all new kinds of Bass music. There are also exhibitions, lectures and collaborations with classical musicians. I especially like three club nights at Hotel Forum where a lot of great artists come together in three rooms. Every year a lot of people from all over the world arrive to Krakow causing an incredible cultural atmosphere.
This year the topic of Unsound is „suprise”. So what can I say – what will happen is a suprise 😉

With your Radar crew you’re throwing well known parties with international bookings. What can you tell us about the current state of the Electronic music scene in Poland, especially in Krakow?

Three years ago Artur, Ola and me ran a place with a restaurant upstairs and a gallery/club called Radar downstairs.. Unfortunately we had to close it but me and Artur are still throwing parties in different locations in Cracow. The Polish electronic scene is constantly changing – there were some great clubs which are closed now and some new are coming. It is really hard to earn money with Electronic music. People in Poland don’t earn as much as e.g. in Germany or England so we can’t do an expensive ticketing policy because people can’t afford to pay it. That’s also the reason why it’s so difficult to invite some good producers from abroad. On the other hand the Electronic music scene in Krakow is growing – there are several cool collectives such as ”NYP”, ”Dubniki”, ”Veni Vidi Techno” or ”Deep Impact” and also the Unsound Festival makes great work to develope and promote Electronic music in Poland.

Is there a record that triggered your interest in electronic music and brought you to deejaying?

Not a record but one podcast – I-F – Mixed Up In The Hague vol. 1 from 2000 . It is one of the best mixes I’ve ever heard. This set opened my mind for new music which I’ve never heard before like Italo stuff and took me into The Hague scene.

It seems that you’ve a strong connection to the German scene – especially to Dresden and Leipzig. Last year you also played at Nachtdigital festival. What are the origins of this connection?

I had the luck because Steffen Benneman heard me when I was playing at Unsound Festival and he liked it 😉 Then he wrote to me on soundcloud and invited me to Nachtidigital and that’s how everything started. After that I played in Leipzig and Dresden and I met you. Just a simple, happy story 🙂

What do your parents think about what you do?

I finished law studies and my father dreamed that I would work as a lawyer but I chose another way of life. He still ask me when I will start a normal job and work as a lawyer and there is always the same answer: Dad, I love music and I can’t be a lawer, I hope one day he will understand it.
